The Burial Ground of the Past

The African Burial Ground is a part of history and is important. The A.B.G was a place where African americans were buried.419 bodies from the burial ground were found. There were actually 10-20 thousands bodies buried. Some of the bodies probaly discintergrated. In 1794 the burial ground was closed.

Not much of the A.B.G was saved. In 1991 bones started to turn up when construction workers started building over it.The goverment didn't think there would be bones there.Turns out 40% of the bodies were children and babies.People suspect they died of a disease.

The A.B.G is important because those are some of everyone's ancestors. Also they had been beaten, hung,or burned alive. The punishment for not working. Some slave were used to build buildings.Being a slave was diffucult.

The Burial Ground was so important to alot of people. They beged and pleaded for the contruction workers not to build over the bodies. This took 18 months but they still built over it.But they left a little space for the bodies. In 2007 the place for the bodies became a memorial. They reburied the 419 bodies.Next to where the bodies are buried there is a statue. On the statue it says...

For all those who were lost
For all those who were stolen
For all those who were left behind
For all those who were not forgotten
